Fort Leonard Wood German POW stonework detailed in amazing Corps of Engineers document

The US Army Corps of Engineers published a document in June 2006 around the stonework done by German POWs at Fort Leonard Wood during WWII. It’s an amazing document with tons of maps and photos and if you have any interest in Fort Leonard Wood or the German POWs in Missouri or the USA broadly, you should check it out.

The German POWS created the stonework at Fort Leonard Wood while they were housed there from 1943 to 1946.  They built sidewalks, steps, retaining walls, foundations, chimneys, patios, bridges, and culverts — many of which remain at the post today.

This document is an architectural survey, historic context, and measured drawings of stonework elements created by German POWs during World War II throughout the cantonment of Fort Leonard Wood that had been place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. Check out the document here.
